Discord global age validation delayed until late 2026 to clarify misunderstandings and emphasize privacy protection

Discord announced a delay in the roll-out of its global age validation function to the second half of 2026. The company had previously acknowledged that there were serious deficiencies in the interpretation of how the system actually worked.

Stanislav Vishnevskiy, co-founder and chief technical officer of Discord, responded to the current situation in a newly published blog post, saying that Discord had “failed to meet his expectations” in communicating lines with users on the issue. The resulting confusion leads many to the mistaken belief that all users of the platform must scan or upload their identity documents in order to use Discord properly. Stanislav Vishnevskiy writes: “It appears from the current feedback that many users mistakenly believe that we will require all users to use Discord through facial scanning or uploading of identity documents. This is not the case, but since so many people are misconstrued, it means that we have not been able to do even the most basic communication work.”

According to Stanislav Vishnevskiy, more than 90 per cent of Discord users will never have to undergo any form of age check. Age validation only applies to users who wish to access servers or channels that have been marked as “adult-only”. In addition, many users who do fall within this category will automatically complete their validation by means of signals linked to other accounts (e.g., the time of existence of the account, whether or not there is a means of payment and regular mode of activity). Discord has made it clear that the system does not read messages or view published content. For users who do need to be manually certified, Discord plans to provide multiple authentication options from different suppliers, all of which will be available on the Discord website, with detailed information on how each supplier handles user data. Stanislav Vishnevskiy also confirmed that Discord had abandoned its cooperation with the age certification company Persona, which had conducted a limited test in the United Kingdom in January.

He stated that Persona had failed to meet the new requirements of Discord that any facial age estimate must be fully completed on user equipment, which meant that biometric data would never be sent anywhere. Stanislav Vishnevskiy made it clear that if the user chose not to verify at all, its account would remain unchanged. Friends lists, servers, private letters and voice chats are accessible, with the only change being that the age limit content is not accessible and some default security settings will be enabled.
